Outings in and around Pittsburgh, and New York

During our 2 month stay in the states we tried to see as much as possible of Pittsburgh. We also went to visit Paul, Lizanna, Anthony and Justin in New York.

Natural History museum, 2, half skeleton, half shell ...

I can't remember what kind of animal this is. I guess an early mammal horse kind of beast. There are several half reconstruction / half skeleton animals on display. Funny, but a bit disturbing to see.

Natural History museum, 3, life size copy of a cathedral entrance

When I first saw the structures in the huge hall I thought ... Wow they can't have stolen all this !
With stolen I also mean: "bought very cheap".

But, they were all copies ! apparently it was very in vogue those days to make plaster copies of famous buildings, facades etc. Whole teams of people specialised in this craft roamed the world (Babylon, Egypt, France etc) to make these copies for the wealthy.

I forgot which original cathedral this is. Looks very French, but that's as far as I get.
Wow, actually, I can tell you more, when I looked at the photo in it's original size:

Downtown Pittsburgh, a Hummer ...

Big is better ... especially for cars. This is even a smaller Hummer, a H2. The RedTeam has H1 Hummers, even bigger than this one. These H2 versions are not really off-roaders. Their design is quite different from the original military Humvee's.

The Cathedral of Knowledge

Really ! I'm not kidding, that's what it's called. It's a huge tower right in the middle of the Pittsburgh University area. Very handy for orientation purposes. It could be that the official name is "Cathedral of Learning" .... I'm not sure.

Phipps Botanical gardens, 4, Did you know ?

that vanilla comes from an orchid ?

I certainly didn't !

Phipps Botanical gardens, 2, Hannah watching the model trains

The Phipps botanic botanic garden has a large collection of plants, trees, butterflies. Very interesting.
